19Th C Carved Wood FOX Carnival Carousel Animal fair merry-go-round vtg folk art
This important and historic mid to late 19th century European carved and painted wooden fox amusement ride is one of the earliest produced children's carousels (merry-go-round) rides and would have been at a fair or carnival, powered by a horse attached to a rope. It's truly a museum quality piece and has been owned and displayed in one for decades. Hand carved wood, two-sided, original paint with beautiful coloring, detail, and patina, resting on a cast iron base, all make this the perfect unique, attractive one-of-a kind decorative piece. Circa 1850 to 1890; Amsterdam, Netherlands. It has been owned and featured in numerous exhibits in the museum for decades. This is from one of the earliest examples of the modern platform style carousel, called dobbies, that were invented in the mid 19th century. They were powered by a live horse attached to a rope that turned the carousel as the horse walked around it.
Later they were powered by a steam engine. Dimensions: Approx 35" Long x 24" High x 6 Wide. Highly desirable wear/tear consistent with age and use. The item "19Th C Carved Wood FOX Carnival Carousel Animal fair merry-go-round vtg folk art" is in sale since Wednesday, September 4, 2019.
